Writing a Cover Letter

Writing a Cover Letter

A cover letter is a crucial part of your job application, sent alongside your CV. It’s your chance to introduce yourself, highlight your unique qualifications, and explain why you’re the perfect fit for the job. Unlike a CV, which lists your qualifications and experience, a cover letter allows you to tell your story and showcase your enthusiasm for the role.

Best Practices for Writing a Cover Letter
1. Do Your Research

Before you start writing, dive deep into understanding the company. Beyond reading the job description, explore the organisation’s website to understand their mission, vision, culture and values. Knowing their industry, competitors and market position can give you a competitive edge during interviews.

2. Address the Right Person

Whenever possible, address your cover letter to a specific person. Look for the hiring manager’s name on the job listing, company website, or LinkedIn. If you can’t find a name, “Dear Hiring Manager” or “Dear [Department] Team” works too. Personalising your letter shows attention to detail and genuine interest.

3. Tailor Each Letter

Generic cover letters rarely impress. Customise each one to the job and company you’re applying to. Highlight the skills and experiences that make you the best candidate for that specific role.

Structure of a Cover Letter

A cover letter typically consists of three parts:

1. Introductory Paragraph

Start with a strong opening statement. Mention the position you’re applying for, how you found the job listing, and your availability. For example: “Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name], I am excited to apply for the [Position] at [Company], as advertised on [Where You Found It]. I am confident that my background in [Your Field] makes me a perfect fit for this role.”

2. Skills Paragraph

Align your skills and experiences with the job requirements. Use specific examples to demonstrate how you meet these needs. For instance: “My experience in [Your Skill] has equipped me with the necessary tools to excel in this role. At my previous job, I [specific achievement], which resulted in [positive outcome].”

3. Closing Paragraph

Explain why you’re interested in this role and the company. Show that your values align with theirs and how you can contribute to their goals. “I am particularly drawn to [Company] because of [specific reason]. I am eager to bring my [specific skills] to your team and contribute to [Company’s goals].”

Tips for a Standout Cover Letter
  • Keep it concise: Your cover letter should be no longer than one A4 page, ideally three to five short paragraphs.
  • Be confident: Highlight your unique selling points and clearly state why you are the best candidate.
  • Format it well: Use the same font and size as your CV. Keep the layout clean and uncluttered. If you’re printing, use high-quality white paper.
  • Provide evidence: Back up your claims with concrete examples from your past experiences.
What to Avoid
  • Being too generic: Tailor your letter for each job application.
  • Repeating your CV: Complement your CV, don’t duplicate it.
  • Exceeding one page: Keep it concise and to the point.
  • Neglecting proofreading: Spelling and grammar errors can ruin a great cover letter.

By following these tips and structuring your cover letter effectively, you’ll create a compelling introduction that showcases your strengths and aligns you with the company’s needs. Good luck with your job search!
